I heard the distressing news about the future demolition of the Canal House, The New Hope Inn and the Moonlight on my recent visit back to my teenage haunt. Situated on the canal along Mechanic Street, apparently 21 new condos are about to constructed in place of these historic landmarks. I don't mind change, but the fact that these building are being replaced with townhouses that are starting at $800,000 a piece, frightens me.
Alas, The New Hope Historical Society informed me that the decision was based on the fact that the buildings had been structurally damaged as far back as the 50's - when Historical Preservation was seen as an eccentric waste of time.
I will continue to keep this site updated as to the fate of the Canal House - perhaps the developer will have a change of heart and re-create the Canal House in all it's splendour! |
