The Twisted Vine is a locally-owned and operated wine bar / wineshop in historic downtown Silver City, NM. The appearance of the place is nothing exceptional: Retail space up front, followed by a bar area, lounge, and deck. The spaces are all clean and excedingly comfortable (especially the deck), but there's no eye candy here.
There's no eye candy, but that's fine. What becomes quickly clear is that the Twisted Vine is about people and community, not impressive visual theatrics. The owner is clearly interested in his customers and in his local winemakers. He focuses strictly on New Mexico wines, and his copious knowledge indicates he is quite familiar with each New Mexico vinyard, and with each New Mexico winemaker. He is an advocate of both, and with good reason: I discovered, much to my amazement, that there are some quite good wines produced in this part of the country.
But if the owner of the Vine displays an interest in locally produced wines, this interest is surpassed only by his interest in the people who visit his establishment. Upon my second visit, nearly six months after my first - because I live hundreds of miles away - he remembered not only my face and my interest in New Mexico wines, but also my primary interest in the region: Backpacking. And his welcome for me was no less than that for the other customers, obviously locals known to him by name, who were there at the time.
The Twisted Vine is a fine example of what the Slow Food movement is all about: Local economies. Locally-produced foods. People. And the importance of each of these ingredients.
If you're passing through Silver City, the Twisted Vine is a comfortable place to pass some time before or after dinner, or to explore New Mexico wines. And if you're local - it would be nearly criminal to avoid the place! |

I don't often drink alcohol, and seldom drink wine-- but I enjoy going to the Twisted Vine and you probably will, too.
The ambiance is warm and friendly, there are several rooms to choose from: the front room (where there is live music several nights a week), the wine bar itself, the lounge area behind the bar (compelte with comfy couches and chairs) and even an outdoor deck hanging over the Big Ditch.
Since you may want a bite of something to soak up the wine, be sure to check out the snacks in the refrigerated cases in the front room-- and yes, soft drinks are available there as well. |
