I recently moved back to Fresno and into it's Tower District neighborhood. I was really pleased to see that something worthwhile withstood the test of time in this town (that tends to be so trendy that it lets the best restaurants/businesses slip through its fingers and out of business).
I was also pleased to see that my old friend, Brett Wayte was managing Butterfields. He brings a certain ambiance to the place, reminiscent of Cheers. He knows everyone's names and is so friendly and welcoming.
The food is consistently good and goes well with the selection of great micro-brews. It was also nice to see that they have decided to include a draft domestic (Bud Light) for those who's palates may not be accustomed to the finer tastes of micro-brewed beers. Nice touch!
The live entertainment is a nice touch, as well. Although it can be a bit loud, most people who go to Butterfield expect a noisier atmosphere, as it is a neighborhood brewpub.
My recommendation? Wednesday night's ALL YOU CAN EAT RIBS FOR $8.95...a bargain! Also, try the SUNDAY BRUNCH...same price, excellent choices. |

Probably the best change made was changing ownership. The new owners have an extensive food background and the beer is still being brewed by the original brewmaster. Paint, carpet and a revived focus on the food give this place 5 stars at an affordable price. I recommend you check it out. |

Oh, how terribly disappointing to visit a restaurant with all the possibilities that can't seem to realize them no matter how hard it tries. Color Butterfield's Brewing Company blue.
Many bar and grills make the mistake of trying too many things. Too big a menu, too many dishes offered, too much wine (often leaving a diner without a chosen vintage in stock). Butterfield's, to its credit, does not make mistakes. The menu is basic and to the point, which is refreshing. After all, it is the microbrewery and beer that sells.
As much as one hopes for even a decent experience at Butterfields, multiple visits yield the same result. The food is average to a fault. Even though prime rib is a simple dish to prepare, Butterfields' meat is often tough and wrongly prepared. A request for "medium" comes back either medium rare or medium well. Chicken dishes are often tough with overwhelming sauces. No subtlety here.
Yet, can't one just return a poorly prepared steak to the kitchen? Unfortunately, not here. The absolute worst attribute of Butterfield's is the service. The restaurant is so loud that it is virtually impossible to carry on a conversation much less hail a waitress. Waiving one down actually, and quite to one's shock, results in a harsh response such as a rude "I'll get right with you!" And, unfortunately, multiple visits seem to yield the same service with different faces.
Unfortunately, for all its efforts, Butterfield's is not a destination for food. Stick to the beer and the bar where the service understands what their tips are depending upon. |
